2024 kicked off with an exciting repertoire of arts and culture events (looking at you, Singapore Art Week!) and we’re venturing into February 2024 with even more to look forward to. Whether you’re out with family, friends, partners, or on a solo date, here are five arts and culture events we’ve picked out for you, ranging from family-friendly theatre shows and concerts to immersive exhibitions and even a vibrant festival!
1. The Sea is a Field

Dive into The Sea is a Field, where the Singapore Art Museum Fellowship programme spills its secrets on artists trying to crack the code of sailing between Port Dickson and Singapore. There’s no straightforward route, just a wild August 2023 journey weaving through Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore on local ferries. Charles Lim works his magic with video, while Simryn Gill adds her flair with photography and text. This raw, untouched portside gem becomes the ultimate playground for artists playing hide-and-seek with distances and closeness in their creative space.
The Sea is a Field is running from now till 21 April 2024 at the Singapore Art Museum, Level 1, Block 37, Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Opening hours are from 10am to 7pm daily. Admission is free.
2. VCHpresents Chamber: Figaro in a Pocket

Prepare for a pint-sized operatic adventure as Mozart's comedic masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro, pirouettes onto the stage this February! With the moves of guest violinist and Zurich Opera House's First Concertmaster Wang Xiaoming, the musicians from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and singers from the Singapore Symphony Choruses are ready to dazzle you with this shrunken-down spectacle. Get cosy with the opera crew as they serve up a pocket version of one of the greatest hits in the operatic universe!
Go on a mini adventure with VCHpresents Chamber: Figaro in a Pocket from 3 to 4 February 2024 at the Victoria Concert Hall. Tickets are priced from $20.
3. Heman Chong: Meditations on Shadow Libraries

Launching into the new year with flair, STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery presents Meditations on Shadow Libraries. Renowned artist Heman Chong takes the spotlight with a captivating solo exhibition curated by Brian Kuan Wood. Unravelling the paradoxes of modern publishing, Chong's show unravels the quirky dance between tangible books and digital wonders. With humour and finesse, he challenges us to envision a world where information flows freely. As Chong's art blurs the lines between knowledge and experience, Meditations on Shadow Libraries invites us to dance with the uncharted, turning every encounter into a shared adventure.

4. Singapore Sky Lantern Festival

Ever dreamt of having your own romantic Tangled moment or jetting off to Taiwan for their iconic Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival? Singapore is bringing that magical moment to you with the debut of the Singapore Sky Lantern Festival at Sentosa’s Palawan Green! Spend your afternoon exploring the festival and soaking up a slew of music and cultural performances from their surprise guests (we can’t wait to see who’s in the lineup!) before finding a comfy spot to watch the night sky light up with lanterns. Grab yourself one and jot down your wishes before sending them off into the sky. Made with biodegradable oiled rice paper, the lanterns are tethered with bamboo strings while they take a brief, enchanting flight before coming back down to earth and into your hands for a beautiful memory to take home with you.

5. KidsFest 2024

Looking to keep your little ones entertained this February? Look no further than KidsFest 2024, where the beloved festival is back with four smashing theatre productions! Back by popular demand, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt makes an uproarious return through this lively adaptation from the West End, complete with catchy tunes and surprises, from 1 to 4 February 2024. Then, put on your party hats for Spot’s Birthday Party from 15 to 18 February 2024 for a jubilant celebration with interactive games, dancing, and the lovable pup Spot. I Believe in Unicorns brings a spellbinding tale of Tomas and his magical encounter with storytelling unicorns from 22 to 25 February 2024 before the festival concludes and welcomes the month of March with the classic tale of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show with over 75 puppets from 29 February to 3 March 2024.
