Loving Benjamin Kheng's NDP 2024 Theme Song? You’re ‘Not Alone’

This might be the biggest MV drop since Just Catch! We’re talking about this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) theme song, titled “Not Alone”, written and performed by Benjamin Kheng. We’ve listened to it on repeat since its release, and we can tell you it’s got the feels.

The song, and the music video checks all the boxes in answering the question of what it means to be Singaporean. This is not an ordinary video with our flag and buildings. Watch it to see how painstakingly the creative and production team captured the places and things that hold meaning for us.

There are also nods to NDP songs of the past - starting with the river that always flows in the Kit Chan/Dick Lee classic ‘Home’, that Kheng uses as a symbolic representation about people coming together. The video’s producers worked closely with the National Heritage Board in depicting vignettes featuring some elements of Singapore’s built heritage.

As the saying goes, it’s the people that make the places, and Kheng himself describes the whole process of putting the song and the video together as “a labour of love”. There are little bits of surprises when you listen closely to the song, which is all at once, poppy, moving, and something you can expect everyone in the stands at the parade to sing along to.

As Kheng predicts, this is a track you would expect to hear on the radio or on your streaming playlists. So, put it on yours, and on repeat. There might be other NDP songs designed to be rousing and anthem-like, but take a bow NDP 2024, we think you might have added to the NDP canon with a simple, bright and very assuring song about what it means to be a part of this little island we call our own.
