“We are revolting children
Living in revolting times
We sing revolting songs
Using revolting rhymes
We'll be revolting children”

Often dismissed as “revolting” by their authoritarian school headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, the children of Matilda The Musical overturn the negative implication of the adjective and revolt against injustice—all while captivating audiences.

Adapted from the beloved Roald Dahl children’s novel, the four-time Tony-winning musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company returns to Singapore at the Sands Theatre. Featuring high-energy musical numbers consisting of over-the-top choreography and even some Latin dancing, it is 140 minutes worth of impressive entertainment with reflective dialogue, remarkable stunts, and witty jokes.

It tells the story of a girl with a gifted mind who can multiply triple-digit numbers in mere seconds and read far better than her peers. But Matilda’s intelligence is not what makes her special—it is her bravery that sets her apart.

Little, not brittle

Despite her young age, she has no qualms about standing up for those who are treated unfairly. When Miss Trunchbull torments her classmates, Matilda is often the first to speak up and boldly declare: “That’s not right!”

As scary as confronting a grown adult is—especially with the threat of the Chokey (a coffin lined with iron spikes) hanging over her head—Matilda’s sense of justice surpasses her small stature.

A lasting impression

Matilda’s influence even extends to the adults in her life. When she starts school, she meets her teacher Miss Honey, who very quickly recognises her extraordinary abilities.

With her timid personality, Miss Honey was never able to stand up against Miss Trunchbull, who had wronged her and her family. As she gives Matilda the confidence to be proud of her intelligence, Matilda helps her find courage and reclaim her stolen inheritance from the headmistress.

Together, they impart a key lesson: No matter how small you feel, you can make a big difference—in your own life and others’.

Just as Matilda leaves a lasting impact on Miss Honey’s life, she does the same for audiences in the Sands Theatre. After being sucked in for over two hours, many got up from their seats to give the cast a well-deserved standing ovation.

If you have yet to see Matilda The Musical, it is time to right an injustice. The show runs from now till 7 April 2024 at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands. Tickets start from $68.
