As Halloween approaches, Catch recognises that not everyone is a fan of jump scares or chilling horror movies. For those seeking a more tranquil way to enjoy the season, Catch has curated a list of seven events to help you embrace our local arts and culture scene and escape the fright.

1. Sketch Up (Oct 26)

They say the pen is mightier than the sword, so why not defend yourself from the creatures lurking in the streets by grabbing your pen (or pencil, if you prefer) and heading down to “Sketch Up”? This inaugural outdoor mass-sketching event, organised by Arts House Limited, welcomes everyone – regardless of age, sketching ability, or susceptibility to getting scared.

Celebrate the iconic Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall building with fellow sketch enthusiasts. Once the sketching session concludes, a special digital gallery featuring all the sketches by event participants will be unveiled.

You can then vote for your favourite sketch, and two lucky voters will each win a Brasserie Astoria dining voucher worth $100. The sketch that receives the most votes will win a Huion Kamvas 13 Drawing Pad Tablet and Pen Display (valued at $239), along with a Brasserie Astoria dining voucher worth $100.

Tickets to the event are currently sold out, but Arts House Limited is still accepting walk-ins. So take the chance and express your creativity with your family and friends!

2. Broadway Beng - Fukien Special (Oct 23 - Oct 26)

Why scream your lungs out when you can sing your heart out? Join director and theatre performer Sebastian Tan for the highly anticipated “Broadway Beng - Fukien Special”, the ninth instalment of the beloved “Broadway Beng” performance series.

This time, the show is dedicated to classic Hokkien songs, promising a night filled with nostalgia and a celebration of our unique Singaporean Hokkien culture. Expect a vibrant explosion of colours and sway along to a live band, along with Broadway Beng’s trio of sassy background singers: Denise Tan, Audrey Luo and Sharon Sum.

Tickets are selling out fast, but there are still VIP booths available for groups of four to six for Saturday, Oct 26, to get up close and personal with the star himself. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable evening!

3. School of Tomorrow (Oct 17)

Learning doesn’t have to be scary, and this particular “school” experience is here to prove it. “School of Tomorrow” is an immersive exhibition about sustainability, initially commissioned for Singapore Design Week 2023. Due to the success of its first edition, it’s now back for Term 2.

Open to “students” of all ages, this exhibition is designed to prepare us for our greatest challenge: addressing the threats posed by a changing planet. Ten familiar school subjects, from sciences to humanities, are given a sustainability twist, highlighting crucial environmental issues like waste, pollution, food, energy and climate change, while offering innovative solutions.

You can look forward to an immersive school experience, complete with adorable decorations, ushers in school uniforms and even a canteen and sick bay. Each "class" provides valuable insights into important environmental topics, demonstrating that learning about our planet can be both fun and impactful.

4. Hopelessly Devoted: A Celebration Of Olivia Newton-John (Oct 12)

Singer Olivia Newton-John may no longer be with us, but her music lives on in the tribute concert “Hopelessly Devoted: A Celebration Of Olivia Newton-John”.

Hosted by Olivia’s niece Tottie Goldsmith, this nostalgic event features Singapore's very own BASE Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Jessica Gethin. The concert will celebrate the icon’s life and legacy with international singers breathing new life into her greatest hits.

Expect a lineup of the best songs by this talented artist with 100 million records sold worldwide – from the romantic ballads “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “I Honestly Love You”, to the upbeat anthems “Physical” and “You're the One That I Want”.

This event promises to evoke nostalgia and joy, uniting fans of all ages in a heartfelt homage filled with music, love and inspiration. As the music fills the air, you’ll feel the warmth of Olivia’s spirit – a reminder that while she may be gone, her influence will continue to inspire for years to come.

Drown out the sounds of screaming banshees at Singapore’s largest free alternative music festival, Baybeats 2024. For its 23rd edition this year, Baybeats will feature a dynamic lineup of local and international alternative artists.

The festival will present a diverse range of music sub-genres and artists, including post-hardcore bands from Australia and Japan, math-rock outfit CHS from South Korea and for the first time, indie-rock alternative artist Mèow Lạc from Vietnam. Notable returning acts include B-Quartet and sub:shaman, who will debut new material after a five-year hiatus.

Let’s not forget our homegrown talent as part of the Baybeats Budding Band programme, who will be showcasing their skills on the same stage as seasoned local favourites like The Great Spy Experiment, Wormrot and Forests.

Come celebrate Singapore’s vibrant alternative music scene along with these passionate artists and let the music take over!

Who says we can’t turn Halloween into a fairytale? With all the pretty lights, decorations and enchanting activities at the National Museum of Singapore’s 137th anniversary event, you're in for a treat!

As we bid farewell to the beloved "Story of the Forest", a stunning installation inspired by William Farquhar's natural history drawings, the museum transforms into a magical space filled with nature-inspired wonders.

Immerse yourself in the soothing sounds of nature as you unwind in the aromatic forest-inspired lounge, where the air is fragrant with the scents of the earth. If you’re feeling creative, you can even customise postcards featuring unique designs or craft your very own animal-themed bag charm to bring home.

Whether you’re looking to relax or recharge, this tranquil oasis is the perfect way to honour the end of an era while welcoming the next chapter at the museum.
