Jubilee Classics [G]
This December, City Chinese Orchestra celebrates half a century of music-making with an evening of enduring Chinese classics. Beloved tunes such as Wang Li Ping’s Overture to Dream of the Red Chamber, Liu Wen Jin’s The Great Wall Capriccio, and Peng Xiu Wen’s The Moon Rises will be performed under the direction of the Orchestra’s founding Music Director, Dr Tay Teow Kiat. To celebrate this golden jubilee, the Orchestra will also be performing pieces by composers whom the Orchestra shares deep artistic ties with. The poignant melodies of Hua Mu Lan, composed by He Zhan Hao, co-composer of the celebrated Butterfly Lover’s Concerto, will tell the story of this legendary female warrior. Pieces by the Orchestra’s resident composers, Li Chong Wang and Lin Wei Hua, will depict human’s bittersweet love for the river - at times a raging menace but also a birthplace of civilisations. The concert will culminate with Winter from Lu Liang Hui’s Four Season Suite, leaving the audience on a resonant high note.
Since its founding in 1974, City Chinese Orchestra has been a cornerstone of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. Led by Music Director, Cultural Medallion and Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award recipient, Dr Tay Teow Kiat, the Orchestra is entirely volunteer-run. Over the Orchestra’s 50 years, it has established itself as both a pioneer and stalwart of Classical Chinese music. It was the first Chinese orchestra to stage a concert featuring the entire score of the 1987 television show Dream of the Red Chamber, a format that has since been emulated by Chinese orchestras worldwide. Yet, it is the orchestra’s unwavering dedication to performing the classics that has won the hearts of its audience and has become its signature at every concert.
The concert will be performed in Chinese.
